車両速度に応じ空気の抵抗力が車体に働くことで、車体は地面に押し付けられたり、逆に浮かび上がろうとする。空気抵抗の増減によりスピード、ハンドリング、燃費など車両の走行に大きな影響を及ぼすため、F1のように100/1秒や1000/1秒を競い合う場では、上下方向に働くリフトフォース・ダウンフォースを重視した設計を行っている。速度や燃費に影響する空気抵抗を下げることはもちろん、限られたパワーを有効に地面に伝えるため、空気の抵抗を利用してタイヤを地面に押し付け、より高いグリップを得ることも重要である。

The resistance of air acts on the car body according to the vehicle speed, so the car body is pressed against the ground or tries to float from the ground.  Increase / decrease in air resistance has a great effect on vehicle driving such as speed, handling, and fuel efficiency. 
In places like Fourmla-1 where competing in 100/1 seconds and 1000/1 seconds, the cars are designed emphasizing lift force and downforce that work in the vertical direction.  In addition to reducing the air resistance that affects speed and fuel consumption, it is also important to use the air resistance to push the tires against the ground to obtain a higher grip in order to effectively transmit the limited power to the ground.
